Confusion over DU entrance tests for the English (H) course

A week after the Delhi University decided not to hold any entrance tests for the English (H) course, there’s confusion galore. Now, the committee set up by the DU V-C to decide admission issues has asked colleges to come up with a plan for a common entrance test by early next week.

The new order follows protests by colleges about the university decision. Admitted Prof Sharmistha Panja, dean of the arts faculty and part of the committee, “We’ve sent out modalities on a common entrance test to colleges.

If more than 10 colleges agree to hold the common test, then they can do so. Others may go by the CBSE merit list, as decided by the university earlier.” That’s not all. Colleges willing to go by the results of the common entrance test will have to abide by certain other conditions. These include the student getting a minimum of 70% in aggregate as well as 70% in English in CBSE. Colleges will also not be allowed to hold any interviews and will have to give a weightage of 70-30 to the entrance test and CBSE marks for admission.

Dean of colleges, meanwhile admitted that a decision will have to be reached soon. “We’re hoping that the matter will be resolved soon, though we have advised colleges that they can either go for the common entrance or the CBSE marks only.”

The deadline to come to a decision is Tuesday, after which the committee will meet to decide on the matter, informed university sources.
