Project works under the CCE should be fun : CBSE

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Chairman Vineet Joshi said project work given to the schoolchildren should be a fun activity done collectively in class and should not be carried home to add to their parents’ load.

‘The projects given to the students are supposed to be done in groups and in the class. It should be made more joyful and as it is a part of learning process,’ Joshi said.

‘It should not become an extension of work to be done at home or by parents. It also should not be outsourced from shops,’ Joshi said while addressing an interactive session here.

The session witnessed a volley of questions from parents of the students of CBSE schools who claimed that project works given to students under the continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) system, in most cases, leads to no learning and adds to the pressure on students.

Project works under the CCE is done to enhance the self-learning and study skills through in-class activities, added Joshi.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has initiated steps to rectify flaws in its new “Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation” system following large-scale complaints from students and parents.

The new system was introduced from the 2009-10 academic year in Class IX with an aim to reduce stress among students. However, several students and parents complained that the CCE was in fact putting unnecessary strain on them with daily slip tests, projects, seminars, notebook corrections, emotional response in class, physical education, extra-curricular activities, viva etc. Even teachers, who were initially excited about CCE, complain that the new system is “confusing”.

The CBSE has decided to create a cadre of trainers involving parents and train teachers afresh to ensure the proper implementation of CCE in the current academic year 2010-11. In circular to all CBSE schools it stated: “The Board has decided to create a band of ‘parent advocates’ who will be trained in the various aspects associated with the implementation of CCE. Parents of students studying in CBSE schools can apply to be members of the committee by submitting online application.”
