Too many exam entrants look for the content words in the question to see what it is about and then dump whatever they know on the page. It’s better than nothing, but especially if you are well prepared, you will probably write too much and gain no marks at all for the extra parts you write!! It doesn’t matter how much you know if the question doesn’t ask about it!

Get to know your syllabus. Find out in each section the depth required. Don’t rely too much on your text books - they contain a lot of extra information to help explain what you need to know or to make it more relevant or interesting. Make the most of your teacher’s expertise.

Listen to your teachers and ask their advice. They will be delighted to see you thinking in such a proactive way about your own study progress and will save you a lot of time that you could waste trying to find out for yourself.

If it’s been a while since your last standardized exam, you’ll probably need to spend some time brushing up on your test taking skills before you actually take your test. Most standardized exams consist of multiple choice or true/false items, or a combination of the two types of questions.

During the weeks prior to your scheduled exam date, it’s a good idea to complete one or more practice tests specific to the exam you are going to take. Score your practice test questions, and look closely at the items you missed. By making sure you understand the reasons the answers you selected were incorrect, you’ll be in a better position to interpret the questions correctly the next time.

Overturning its earlier decision of a confidential examination system, a recent ruling of the Central Information Commission (CIC) will now allow students to know about the procedure of examinations conducted across the country.

Students will now be able to know their question-wise marks secured in examinations, under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The much-awaited decision was taken on December 22, 2008 after a petition was filed by Ajeet Kumar Pathak, a class XII student from Bihar, who sought the question-wise marks secured in his Chemistry paper.

The CIC has directed authorities from all education boards across the country to follow the guidelines.

Earlier, all the information regarding the conduct of examinations was kept confidential under Section 8 (1) of the RTI Act.

CIC Commissioner, Shailesh Gandhi said, “None of the exemption clauses in the RTI Act are applicable in this case. The ruling is now ‘in principal’ applicable to all authorities conducting exams in the country.”

Earlier in March 2006, Treesa Irish from Kerala also filed the same petition but her petition was rejected stating that the petition was ‘personal’ in nature.

G. Ravinder, Joint Director, National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) said, “This ruling is in line with the National Curriculum Framework 2005, which emphasizes transparency in conducting examinations.”

The coming festive season would not be colorful for students who are appearing for pre-board exams. They are busy preparing for exams that will begin after the winter break. The pre-board exams in schools affiliated to CBSE will start from January 3.

Surmounting pressure from parents and teachers has made the students nervous. The tension seems to escalate when parents start keeping count of the hours their children studied or not allowing them to use their cell phones to chat with their friends.

For some, studying the entire syllabus for the half-yearly exams and then again for the pre-boards is a tedious affair. For others it is a revision exercise that helps them to secure good marks in the board exams.
