In a first step towards launching a nationwide single entrance test for admission to engineering courses, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to make the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) online, just like the Common Admissions Test (CAT).
According to sources at the CBSE, next year’s exam will be online and will be held on April 29, 2012. This year the board faced a number of problems following reports that question papers had leaked.
The exam was postponed by three hours in many centres in Karnataka while exam dates were rescheduled in other states. “In the first year, the board is planning to allow students to write the exam in the traditional format. But in coming years, the online format will be compulsory,†a CBSE official said. “When CAT was made online, there was resistance from students and even a debate in Parliament. We do not want to mess up the issue. The board has already told the students to be prepared for the new format.â€
